Randal Kleiser est un réalisateur né le 20 juillet 1946 et qui a accédé à la renommée internationale avec son premier long métrage, Grease (1978). Avant cela, son film de thèse de maîtrise à l'USC, Peege (1972), a lancé sa carrière professionnelle et a été sélectionné par la Library of Congress National Film Registry en 2007. Son téléfilm The Gathering (1977) a remporté un Emmy Award. S'ensuit une carrière riche et diversifiée, avec notamment au cinéma Le Lagon Bleu (1980), Le Vol du Navigateur (1986), Croc- Blanc (1991), Le Dernier Anniversaire (1996) ou encore La Dernière Preuve (1998). Derrière sa caméra se sont succédés, bien sûr, John Travolta et Olivia Newton-John à plusieurs reprises, mais aussi Brooke Shields, Daryl Hannah, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ethan Hawke, Helena Bonham Carter, ... Il a enseigné à l'USC et a donné des cours de mise en scène dans des festivals de cinéma en Europe. Avec George Lucas, il a produit The Nina Foch Course for Filmmakers and Actors, une vidéo éducative pour les aspirants acteurs, scénaristes et cinéastes. Kleiser a toujours été intéressé par les avancées technologiques, et a réalisé Chérie, j'ai rétréci le public en 70mm 3D pour les parcs Disney, la série en réalité virtuelle Defrost (2015), l'expérience Grease XR (2020) capturé de manière volumétrique à l'aide de 90 caméras, et un simulateur de réalité virtuelle pour former les soldats, sur demande du gouvernement américain.
